I have always considered myself “active” and “in shape.” Started dance as a 3 year old and continued through college; cheerleader in middle school through high school; and began running in my college years once I gained the famous freshman 15lbs. Graduated college with a BSN in Nursing with a love for promoting health with a focus on prevention. As a RN working with my patients, no matter what their current health condition may be, their care plans always included diet and exercise. I have always felt that is the key in prevention of chronic illnesses. My fitness status continued to be running and a doing few exercises tapes at home (the Firm, PX90), and eating a “fat free” diet until I was introduced to CrossFit in the fall of 2009. “CrossFit,” “ what is that ?” I can remember asking my neighbor Evelyn who had just finished her “on ramp” and was showing me all these crazy exercise moves like the angry gorilla and burpees! “And the workouts only last up to 20 minutes…some less, but it kicks your butt,” she told me! As a mother of three very active kids, and a husband with a demanding job, workouts lasting 20 min. or less, I had to find out about this CrossFit and thank you Evie, I’m so glad I did!
I have been active in CrossFit going on 2 years and try to get in 5-6 days a week! I have loved it from the first day of my on ramp with Coach Karen at the “old box.” I remember thinking as I looked around, where are all the gym machines, treadmills, mirrors? This is an old warehouse with no AC…doors open, it’s hot, dogs running around…not your typical gym…..I love it!!!! From the first session with Coach Karen, I knew it was for me as she explained the “air squat” demonstrated, and gave a rationale of why one would want to “squat” in such a way! She spoke to the nurse in me….there is always a rationale! Coach K explained these “CrossFit Fundamental Movements” that would apply to our everyday lives, we relate to these moves. This is how you sit in a chair, pick up your child or dog (Fenway), or put heavy groceries up on a shelf. This is what we eat, lean meats, veggies, NO PROCESSED foods no SUGAR….your body is a machine, feed it the fuel it needs! Oh how I wish I met CrossFit when I was much younger, but that is the beauty of it….it is for all ages and stages of fitness. Start CrossFit at any point in your life and watch the benefits!! I have witnessed amazing transformations in so many fellow athletes such as lowering their cholesterol, blood pressure, of course major drop in numbers on the scale and loss of inches, but the most amazing transformation is seeing people become happier individuals as they achieve their goals and step out of their comfort zone to do so! AWESOME…
CrossFit is way of life for me…and as a Level 1 Certified trainer, my goal is to get others to say the same!
