Some of you may have noticed a new set of rules written on our Record Board. If you haven't, check it out. If you have, and you are somewhat offended by rule #1, then you are probably that "person" we are talking about. Read below and you will see that CFOIB isn't the only affiliate that has "Rules"...

CrossFit Charlottesville writes about "Rule #1, No Egos".

If you’ve ever looked at our gym rules, you’ve probably noticed our #1 Rule “No Egos Allowed.”  Taken by itself, Rule #1 encompasses a  nebulous concept.  Ego has several working definitions, but we’re referring to ego as “an exaggerated sense of self-importance.”  When athletes of all levels step into CrossFit Charlottesville, they enter a psychological battleground. Uniquely, in CrossFit, battles aren’t won; they are fought everyday.  We come to the gym to challenge ourselves.  We should be chasing constantly moving targets.

We design workouts (WODs) to challenge the most advanced athletes.  In fact, CrossFit workouts were created to challenge elite athletes, regardless of weights used or the time limit provided.  Given the variety associated with workouts, you can bet that some days the WODs will play to your strengths, but most days the WODs will tax your weaknesses. No one is the best at CrossFit. There will always be someone better than you.

Oftentimes, because we all tend to have egos, we prioritize our performance on the clock.  We’re competitive beings; we want to do better than our peers because our score will be recorded next to other gym members. We want to prove to ourselves that we did “well” on our workout because we measure our performance as a distinct value.  Oftentimes this forces CrossFitters to look over the more important things.

Our egos misguide us to do a lot of negative actions in the gym, including:

  • comparing our score to other athletes in unhealthy ways,
  • sacrificing full range of motion, and
  • scaling the WODs to levels that will put us near the top of the pack.

As trainers, it’s our goal to make you much better people inside and outside the gym. We don’t have the opportunity to watch every rep, every squat, or every workout.  We know your mind is constantly telling your body to cheat that squat depth or rest more than necessary.  It happens to us too.

The problem is that when you only think about that clock and and you’re cheating the squat depth, pushup height, locked out overhead,  telling yourself you can’t do something or not pushing yourself to the limits, you’ve only done a fraction of that workout and your score on the board is meaningless.

No egos means achieving personal excellence, making sure every rep counts and pushing ourselves further, even if that doesn’t translate into the best score.  As we move forward, try to not think about the clock so much, think about the things mentioned above and have the best, hardest workout of your life.

"Come to me with tales of a 900 pound back squat, and I know already of some very serious limitations to your fitness. Come to me with a 4:15 mile - I am suspicious of your total capacities. But, if you tell me you've got a 650 pound back squat, and with a twinkle in your eye, about a 4:50 mile - I know we've got a monster." - Greg Classman, founder of CrossFit

Your host & hostess of the 2009 CrossFit Holiday Party

It was so awesome to have everyone come out and support us for the inaugural CrossFit Christmas Challenge. We hope that we can make next year's event bigger and better! It was also great to have everyone gather together on Saturday night for some food (no so Zone friendly food! Did anyone try Mrs. Anderson's cookies?! I had about 8 or 9), drink, and to listen to Joe's stories. Throughout the night, as I made my way from conversation to conversation, I noticed a profound trend: Everyone was talking about CrossFit OIB. It seems obvious that you would be, your at a CrossFit party, but this was different. It wasn't just "making small talk" with the guest next to you. I could hear the passion in your voices and see the fire in your eyes! It was incredible to hear each of you (and your spouses) talking amongst yourselves about the WODs, your favorite lifts, how much you loathe burpees, how much weight you lost, how much better you feel, etc. It was another proud moment for me as your Coach, to know that I have helped to bring CrossFit into your lives, and that together we have created an incredible team of like-minded FIRE BREATHERS!

Sunday 12.13.09

 Today we rest.

The CrossFit Christmas Challenge was a success. A big thanks to Sandy Morckel (it would not have happened without her planning, time, and awesome fundraising skills!) and to all of our sponsors and all of you who participated and volunteered! Photos of the event as well as race times will be posted later...Right now it is time for the CrossFit Holiday Party and for me to pour a class of wine!!

On a sad note: A friend of mine (Allison) from back home has recently lost a very, very, very dear friend. In an effort to memorialize her memory, I am using this public forum to post a few words that Allison wrote about her friend. Please keep Allison & Sadie in your thoughts and prayers.

Sadie (AKA Little Red, Rojo, Baby Red, Fred, Tee Tee Head, Stonkins, Sahdes, Sadie Mercedes) was born on July 26, 1998 at a trailor park in Auburn, AL to Sonny and Sandy.  Sadie never forgot the lessons learned during 9 weeks at a trailer park and used her blue collar skillz, hard knocks, and generalized anxiety to win over the heart of her Mama and most everyone else she encountered.  Sadie (whose MC name is Sadie 4States) accompanied her Mama all over the United States- doing time in not only Alabama, but also Georgia, Colorado, and lastly Connecticut.  She was employed on a part part time basis at a residential group home, where she allowed adults with severe mental illness to brush her hair and pet her.  She also had a gig at a nursing home, but quit after one shift due to fear of the elevator (she also jumped on an old lady's bed and tried to lick her cake plate).  Sadie's favorite activities included showing her Mama socks and toys, listening to secrets, begging for baked goods (she had a sweet tooth), feet warming, faxing, and loving her Mama (although disguised as disdain).  It is rumored that she was Akon's muse.  Sadie was a loving companion to her Mama for over 11 years before a sudden and severe form of cancer made her very sick.  Her biggest regret was never getting the wart on her head removed.  She is survived by friends and family all over the U.S. and will never be forgotten by those who had the honor of smelling her heavy breath on their face or buried into their pants leg.  Goodbye Baby Girl- the house is so lonely without you!
